What is glucomannan?
Derived from the edible tubers of the amorphophallus konjac plant, glucomannan is a form of dietary fibre, and is a common ingredient in Japanese cuisine. Glucomannan however, is also available from other sources such as yeast. Unlike some dietary fibres, a small amount of glucomannan (amorphophallus konjac) can swell up to 17 times its original volume, when placed in water, making it a more convenient form.
What is glucomannan commonly used for?
As with other forms of dietary fibre, like oats for example, it is helpful at managing cholesterol levels, digestive support and regulating blood sugar. Health professionals, supported by scientific research advocate fibre containing foods, as they are well-known to reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and support digestion. Fibre also creates the feeling of fullness which is helpful for those on weight loss diets.
Why don’t we sell glucomannan?
Safety concerns over supplement forms of glucomannan are notable, with evidence of users complaining of diarrhoea, excess gas and bloating. Tablet forms of glucomannan have been banned due to cases where it has expanded in the oesophagus causing an obstruction, before reaching the stomach.
What are the alternatives?
Flourishe® is also a form of dietary fibre but with universal appeal, as it tastes great! Derived from chicory root, it is the purest form of FOS (fructooligosaccharides which are part of the inulin family). Much of the published work on FOS have been carried out on chicory with findings showing it helps maintain normal intestinal health.
